Golf de Bondues

Hawtree is Bondues’ historic British course: long, wooded and heavily bunkered, rewarding position more than power alone.

Golf de Bondues was created in 1968 north of Lille. Fred W. Hawtree designed the club’s first 18-hole course in a classical British tradition. As thousands of trees matured and playing surfaces evolved, the layout became one of the most established parkland courses in northern France. It now forms one half of a rare architectural pairing with Robert Trent Jones’ more American design. The course occupies relatively flat country at Bondues, strongly structured by trees, hedges and rough. Northern France’s damp climate, wind and dense vegetation influence playability. The atmosphere is enclosed and intimate, very different from the region’s coastal links.

Hawtree created two returning nines with roughly 4,200 trees and 86 bunkers. Fairways can appear generous, but approach angles are narrow. Long, defended greens demand excellent depth control. The heavily bunkered par-three 14th clearly expresses the design philosophy. The course measures 6,227 metres from the back tees and plays to par 73. Doglegs and trees reduce direct lines. Players often benefit from using less than driver to preserve an open approach. Fast, extended greens make first-putt distance especially important.

Bondues is a major member-owned club with more than 1,500 members, strong competitive teams and a respected academy. Facilities include practice areas, short-game zones, clubhouse, dining and reception spaces. Visitor access follows club conditions. 18 holes; par 73; 6,227 metres; Fred W.
