Lauswolt is Friesland’s leading estate course, combining old woodland, understated architecture and the hospitality of a luxury golf resort.
History
Golf & Country Club Lauswolt was founded in 1966 as Friesland’s first golf association. Frank Pennink designed the original nine within the wooded Lauswolt estate at Beetsterzwaag. Nearly thirty years later Donald Steel added nine more holes, opened around 1995-1996. Instead of keeping the two generations separate, the club mixed old and new holes to produce a balanced 18-hole course. The club became a co-owner of part of the estate and developed a close relationship with the neighbouring Landgoed Lauswolt hotel. Golf, heritage and high-end hospitality now form a single destination. The course covers roughly one hundred hectares of woodland, paths, water and maintained grassland. Much of the routing lies within forest more than a century old, containing mature deciduous trees, pines and firs. Five holes move into a more open natural area, creating a clear contrast between wooded corridors and broad views. The atmosphere is quiet, protected and far removed from urban noise. The course, hotel gardens and historic village form one coherent landscape.
Architecture
Pennink’s contribution is classical and restrained, using clearings and mature trees to define strategic lines. Steel introduced greater scale, more open ground and additional water. By mixing holes from both periods, the club avoided a visible front-nine/back-nine division. Bunkering is relatively modest; the main defences are trees, angles and greens set precisely within the woodland. Controlled ball flight and careful construction of the round are more important than raw power. Lauswolt plays to par 72 at approximately 6,044 metres. Wooded holes require disciplined driving because mature trees quickly block recovery routes. Open sections are more exposed to wind and water. Greens are generally medium-sized and easiest to attack from the correct side of the fairway. The course is highly enjoyable to walk, with silence and landscape quality strengthening the rhythm of the round.
Club experience
The experience is closely linked to the adjacent Landgoed Lauswolt luxury hotel, spa and gastronomic restaurant. The club remains a member institution but accepts visitors under its rules. A round can easily become a complete stay with dinner, accommodation and time in Beetsterzwaag. For The Round, Lauswolt is especially suitable for premium events, business meetings and golf weekends. Founded in 1966 as Friesland’s first golf association; original nine by Frank Pennink; extension by Donald Steel in 1995-1996; roughly one hundred hectares of estate landscape; adjacent luxury hotel and fine dining; consistently rated the leading course in Friesland.
