Glasgow Golf Club

Gailes Links is Glasgow Golf Club’s seaside course, opened in 1892 and redesigned by Willie Park Jr in 1912. Its par 71 measures about 5,976 metres from the white markers and crosses heather, gorse, deep bunkers and firm fairways between Irvine and the Ayrshire coast.

Glasgow Golf Club, founded in 1787, wanted land controlled by its members and suitable for winter play. Gailes opened on 19 May 1892. Willie Fernie soon revised the first layout. In 1912 Willie Park Jr and club professional Tulloch redesigned the routing; Park considered Gailes one of his finest creations. The present structure remains substantially theirs. The course occupies sandy ground slightly inland from the Firth of Clyde. The sea is not visible from every hole, but wind, drainage and firmness show its influence. Railway and gorse form strong visual boundaries. Fairways run through shallow valleys between old dune ridges, alternately protecting and exposing shots.

Park combined strategic width with bunkers placed on preferred lines. The third and fourth create a demanding early sequence, while the short sixth asks for exact contact into a compact target. The fourteenth offers a possible par-five recovery, before holes sixteen to eighteen restore pressure through length and tightening corridors. White markers total 6,535 yards, about 5,976 metres, at par 71. Fairways can run quickly and feed a ball toward heather rough. Greens are firm and bunker faces steep. Gailes needs neither cliffs nor giant dunes to feel difficult; repeated narrow angles and imperfect lies create the examination.
