The European Club — Pat Ruddy’s personal work and a manifesto for modern links golf

The course stretches through large dunes on the Wicklow coast, south of Dublin, with the Irish Sea visible or perceptible over much of the layout. Sandy valleys, reeds, ridges, and the beach create very different environments on a relatively compact property.

Pat Ruddy, first a journalist and then a golf architect, began looking for his own golf course in the late 1980s. He identified the dunes of Brittas Bay from the air in 1987, acquired the property, and progressively developed the course with his family. The European Club opened in the early 1990s and for over three decades remained a permanent laboratory: Ruddy continuously expanded, moved, added, and refined his holes. The course features eighteen main holes and two additional par-3s, 7a and 12a.

Ruddy's architecture is deliberately detailed and cerebral. The fairways offer varying widths, but the timber-faced bunkers, dunes, and very elongated greens necessitate precise choices. The famous 12th hole features an exceptionally long putting surface, while the two additional holes allow for multiple playing configurations.

The course alternates between holes nestled among the dunes, long sequences near the beach, and greens perched on exposed plateaus. The shapes are sometimes exuberant, but the difficulty primarily stems from the position and depth of the next shot.

The club historically offered a highly personal visitor experience linked to Ruddy’s family. It was sold in 2025 and closed in December 2025 for major redevelopment, with reopening announced for spring 2027; operational status must be checked before publication.
