Enniscrone Golf Club

Enniscrone Dunes Course — a local story of perseverance raised into the great Sligo dunes

The course is situated on a peninsula between the Atlantic, Killala Bay, and the Moy Estuary. The tall dunes primarily appear in the latter half of the course, where they isolate the holes and create significant elevation changes.

Enniscrone Golf Club was founded in 1918, but its members played on temporary grounds for a long time. A first proper nine-hole course opened at Bartra in 1931. The eighteen-hole course was inaugurated in 1974, designed by Eddie Hackett. Donald Steel later added six new holes in the maritime dunes and restructured the course to create the current Dunes Course.

The design combines Hackett's relatively direct routing with Donald Steel's more spectacular holes. Fairways are often wide in the dunes, but the approach angles and slopes around the greens make lateral errors costly.

The beginning of the course progressively builds difficulty before a very immersive sequence in the dunes. Par 5s are numerous and varied, while several holes close to the estuary are subject to crosswinds.

The club remains deeply connected to Enniscrone and offers a warm experience, with caddies often drawn from members and direct proximity to the seaside resort.
