St Andrews Links commissioned Colt when the estate needed to accommodate a growing golfing population. Opened in 1914, the Eden reflects an architect who preferred strategy and visual uncertainty to brute force. Donald Steel later adjusted selected holes for modern play and safety while respecting Colt’s underlying logic. The course lies northwest of the historic core of the Links near the mouth of the River Eden. Its relief is less dramatic than the Jubilee’s, but the apparently level ground contains old sand movements, hollows and fairway ripples. Firm ground permits a wide range of running approaches. Several holes require players to carry or skirt bunkers that become fully visible only late in the shot, while slightly raised green edges can repel weak approaches. The estuary holes are vulnerable to crosswinds. Moderate length is balanced by a tight par and precise defences.
