Duns Golf Club

Duns Golf Course is a par 71 of 6,298 yards or about 5,759 metres on open parkland beneath the Lammermuir Hills. The present course joins A. H. Scott’s 1921 nine with a 1997 extension through running fairways, burns, five par threes and accessible but continually purposeful golf.

Duns Golf Club was founded on 9 November 1894 at the Working Men’s Social Club. Early golf was played at Castleknowes before a more permanent site was found at Hardens Road. A. H. Scott of Elie designed the new nine, opened in spring 1921. It served the club for more than seventy years. Additional land enabled expansion to eighteen in 1997, linking historic holes with a more modern second loop. The course lies west of Duns among farmland, scattered woodland and the first Lammermuir slopes. Long open views allow wind to cross the fairways. Wellrig Burn and other ditches occupy lower ground. Gentle slopes create uneven lies and slightly raised greens. Woodland is less enclosing than at Edzell or Blairgowrie, giving a broad sense of space.

Placement and par variety define the design. Five par threes include the signature fifteenth, a very short downhill shot of around 107 yards to a two-tier green with trouble short and long. The opening Ruin hole plays beside road and left out of bounds. Par fours use gentle doglegs, fairway sand and raised targets. The 1997 extension blends discreetly with the older course. The white length is 6,298 yards, course rating 70. 9 and slope 124. Fairways are generally generous, but useful sectors narrow near bunkers and burns. Medium greens contain clear slopes and tiers. Wind transforms the par threes and lengthens exposed par fours. Lower sectors are receptive while high ground runs in dry conditions.

Duns is a community club with clubhouse, dining, professional services and visitor booking. The historic town is close and the course combines with Eyemouth, Kelso or Northumberland clubs. Walking is accessible and the rhythm suits mixed groups. Lammermuir views and the absence of resort formality create a clear local experience.

Play it for the way an old nine and modern extension form a natural whole. Duns is wide enough to welcome, yet burns, five par threes and tiered greens require attention.
