Dooks Golf Links — one of Ireland’s oldest links, understated and open to Dingle Bay
Geography & setting
Dooks is located on the Iveragh Peninsula, between Glenbeigh and Dingle Bay. Views extend towards the Slieve Mish mountains, the bay, and the beaches. The terrain consists of low dunes, sandy meadows, and areas more open than those at Ballybunion or Lahinch.
History
Golf has been played at Dooks since 1889, when Scottish officers from the Royal Horse Artillery helped establish an initial nine-hole course. The club, long known as Dooks & Caragh, maintained a deliberately simple identity for nearly a century. Eddie Hackett oversaw the expansion to eighteen holes in the 1970s. Martin Hawtree then refined the course in 2002.
Architecture
The course prioritizes readability, natural movement, and a variety of angles. Bunkers are relatively understated, greens integrate with existing slopes, and several holes offer sufficient width to allow for strategic choices.
The course in detail
The layout progresses without constantly seeking spectacular effects. The quality primarily stems from its rhythm and the seamless flow between sequences.
Club experience
Dooks offers a warm members' club experience. The modern clubhouse maintains a human scale, and a visit here feels less commercialized than at the larger destination venues in Kerry.
Why play this course
The Round selects it for its authenticity and balance: Dooks never tries to impress artificially, but offers a complete and deeply enjoyable round.
Highlights
Golf played since 1889; affiliation with the Golfing Union of Ireland in 1903; expansion to eighteen holes under Eddie Hackett in the 1970s; improvements by Martin Hawtree in 2002.
