Donegal Golf Club — Murvagh’s great double-loop course, often compared with Muirfield

Murvagh is a sandy peninsula spanning over 180 acres, extending into Donegal Bay. The Atlantic Ocean, the Bluestack Mountains, and a protected natural area surround the course, which is largely devoid of urbanization.

Donegal Golf Club settled on the Murvagh Peninsula in the early 1970s. Eddie Hackett designed the course, which opened in 1973, around a vast routing comprising two loops. Pat Ruddy later intervened to remodel several greens, add bunkers, and reinforce playing angles. A new clubhouse opened in the late 1990s.

Hackett's design exploits the width of the terrain and organizes two nine-hole loops, the origin of its frequent comparison to Muirfield. Ruddy added more diagonals, strategic bunkers, and undulations around the greens. The course is long, featuring five par 5s and a total par of 73.

The terrain alternates between open areas, low dunes, and holes closer to the bay. The length becomes truly penalizing in the wind, but the fairways offer enough space for multiple strategies.

Donegal boasts comprehensive practice facilities and a modern clubhouse. Despite its size, the club maintains a local atmosphere and attracts fewer tourists than the country's more renowned destinations.

The Round selects it for the scale of its terrain, its exceptionally balanced routing, and the blend of Eddie Hackett's understated design with Pat Ruddy's more strategic interventions.
