De Herkenbosche

: a varied parkland-and-heath course overlooking the Roer valley.

De Herkenbosche developed into one of central Limburg’s principal golf venues. The club used land where woodland, heath and open countryside meet naturally. Its 18-hole course matured through established planting, improved greens and maintenance focused on preserving both natural character and sporting quality. The venue built its regional reputation on varied holes, reliable playing surfaces and broad visitor access. The property lies near Herkenbosch, close to De Meinweg National Park and the Roer valley. Sandy soils, woodland and heath create a distinctive landscape mosaic. Elevation is more noticeable than in northern Dutch provinces, and wind influences the open holes. Woodland shelters enclosed fairways, while higher areas open towards the surrounding countryside. Dutch Limburg occupies a unique place in the country’s golf geography. Its hills, valleys and varied soils create sightlines and ball flights that are impossible on northern polder courses. The region’s proximity to Belgium and Germany also gives its clubs a naturally cross-border membership and visitor culture.

The design alternates tree-lined corridors, heathland sections and more open holes. Fairway position matters because the preferred side opens the approach. Bunkers and occasional water mainly defend aggressive routes. Fast greens place genuine value on depth control and preparation of the previous shot. The relationship between tee, landing area and green is therefore more important than apparent width. Architects use slopes to create uphill, downhill and uneven-lie shots without making every hole depend on raw length. At approximately 6,177 metres and par 72, the course has full championship length. Wooded holes punish lateral misses, while exposed sections can play considerably longer in wind. Both nines finish with long par fives, keeping pressure on the scorecard. Walking is enjoyable, although elevation adds physical demand.

The club welcomes green-fee players and offers practice, coaching and dining. Roermond, Maastricht and the German border are all accessible. This cross-border position and the parkland-heathland mix make it relevant for The Round members. Local hospitality—terraces, dining, accommodation and access to historic towns—extends the day beyond the final green.
