Golfclub De Haar

De Haar — a contemporary course within the historic park of the Netherlands’ largest castle

The course winds through the ancient landscaped park of Haar Castle, west of Utrecht. Centenarian trees, canals, ponds, meadows, and occasional views towards the castle create a unique heritage environment.

Golfclub De Haar was founded in 1974 in the southern park of Haarzuilens Castle, with an initial nine-hole course designed by Frank Pennink. After lengthy procedures, Bruno Steensels designed a new extension and a complete reconstruction; the current eighteen-hole course opened in September 2021.

Steensels organized a modern parkland architecture featuring sometimes narrow fairways, numerous water hazards, and tactical bunkers. The outer holes are more open and exposed to the wind, while the park holes utilize the trees and historical perspectives.

The course changes significantly between the older sections and the newer areas. The length remains reasonable, but water and angles necessitate careful thought on almost every tee shot.

A visit combines golf and heritage, with a clubhouse situated within the estate and proximity to Haar Castle. The atmosphere remains that of a members' club, accessible to visitors.
