Cruden Bay — a railway-era links turned into an adventure through dunes and blind ground

Located 23 miles north of Aberdeen, the course meanders through expansive, undulating dunes facing the North Sea. The dramatic valleys, combined with views of the bay and the village, lend the layout a theatrical yet entirely natural character.

The current course was commissioned in 1894 by the Great North of Scotland Railway Company and fully opened in 1899, coinciding with the launch of the Cruden Bay Hotel. Old Tom Morris played a role in the original design, which was subsequently remodelled in the early 20th century.

Cruden Bay is defined by its significant elevation changes, fairways that artfully bend around the dunes, and several semi-blind shots. The routing embraces eccentricity, making the ability to read the terrain a central element of play.

The holes in the heart of the course delve deep into the dunes, presenting approaches to greens that are either hidden from view or nestled within hollows. Lateral bounces and the prevailing sea winds significantly complicate distance control.

Visitors are welcomed throughout the week in a traditional club atmosphere rather than a resort setting.
