Chicago Golf Club — Macdonald and Raynor establishing a foundational American golf language

The site is located on the Illinois prairie, on open, gently undulating terrain exposed to the wind.

Founded in 1892 by Charles Blair Macdonald, Chicago was one of the USGA’s five founding clubs. The Wheaton course opened in 1895 and was rebuilt by Seth Raynor in 1923.

Macdonald and Raynor utilize classic templates, expansive greens, and geometric bunkers. The landscape appears simple, yet the angles are extremely precise.

The course is wide, firm, and strategic, with few unnecessary decorative elements.

The club is highly private and maintains a strong historical culture, holding a central place in the origins of organized American golf.
