Mussenden Links — a historic Ben Sayers course strengthened by Harry Colt on Ulster’s north coast

The course is situated between the resort of Castlerock, the River Bann, the dunes, and the Atlantic coast of County Londonderry. Mussenden Temple and the Downhill reliefs dominate some of the horizons.

Castlerock Golf Club was founded in 1901 with an initial nine-hole course. New land was leased in 1908 and Ben Sayers was commissioned to design eighteen holes. The new course officially opened in July 1909. Harry Colt intervened in 1925, introducing several modifications, particularly in the sequence close to the River Bann.

Sayers constructed a compact routing within irregular dunes, while Colt brought greater precision to the greens and angles. Fairways alternate between narrow corridors and wider areas where bunkers dictate the optimal line of play.

The course combines traditional holes set in the dunes, passages close to the railway line, and exposed sequences towards the estuary. The famous 4th hole, Leg o'Mutton, utilizes a severely dog-legged fairway around a burn and wetlands.

Two courses and a traditional clubhouse make Castlerock a practical and rewarding stop on the north-coast links route.
