The Burnside is Carnoustie’s second major course: a par 68 of about 5,434 metres, shorter than the Championship but built from the same links ingredients—firm ground, the Barry Burn, deep bunkers, wind and tight boundaries. It entered golf history when Ben Hogan scored 70 in 1953 Open qualifying.

Golf was played on this ground from 1892, and the layout emerged as the distinct Burnside Course in the 1930s, formally established in 1934. Its development accompanied Carnoustie’s growth as a municipal multi-course complex. It serves members, visitors and open competitions and, exceptionally, has been used for Open qualifying when the Championship was staged next door. Burnside shares Carnoustie’s low coastal landscape between the town, railway, dunes and wet ground. The Barry Burn directly shapes several holes, functioning as both a visual boundary and a scoring hazard. The setting is not theatrically elevated, yet heather, rough, sand and dry turf create a strongly Scottish texture.

Relatively narrow fairways, compact greens and exact bunkering define the design. Out of bounds and the burn sit close to preferred lines. The fifth, a par three surrounded on three sides by the Barry Burn, is the emblematic hole. Exposed closing holes and decisions near water maintain pressure comparable in spirit to the Championship Course. From the white markers the course is about 5,943 yards, approximately 5,434 metres, at par 68. Moderate overall length is deceptive: several par fours require a substantial second shot, wind can alter club selection dramatically and greens are difficult to hold from rough. Heather and pot bunkers punish flat or poorly aligned shots.

The course uses Carnoustie’s central booking system and benefits from the Links facilities, professional shop, performance centre and caddie or hire services subject to availability. It offers Carnoustie golf in a more accessible time and price framework while preserving excellent conditioning and authentic links ground.
