Brora Golf Club

Brora — an intact James Braid links shared by low dunes, livestock and the North Sea

The links unfolds across a low coastal plain to the north of Dornoch. The sea, the surrounding hills, and the livestock visible on the course give it a very direct Highland identity.

Founded in 1891, Brora grew from nine to eighteen holes before James Braid produced the plan in 1923-24 that still largely defines the course.

Braid made use of small greens, diagonally placed bunkers, and subtle changes in direction. The design is straightforward yet never ordinary.

The wind is the primary defender, and electric fences around some greens protect the putting surfaces from grazing animals.

The clubhouse overlooks the links and the warm Highland welcome remains central to the experience.
