Bethpage Black — A. W. Tillinghast building monumental public golf on Long Island

The course traverses undulating, wooded terrain on Long Island, featuring large clearings, sand, thick rough, and long walks between holes.

Opened in 1936 within Bethpage State Park, the Black Course was principally designed by A. W. Tillinghast with Joseph H. Burbeck involved in the wider project.

Massive bunkers, long carries, tilted fairways and strongly defended greens create monumental scale.

The course is long, physical, and demanding. The warning sign on the first tee reflects a truly severe test, especially from the back tees.

Bethpage Black is a highly sought-after public course, with a reservation system, a walking-only policy, and a strong New York culture.
