Askernish — Old Tom Morris’s lost course recovered from the South Uist machair

Askernish is located on South Uist, in the Outer Hebrides, amidst sandy dune grasslands also used by crofters. The Atlantic, the beaches, and the absence of urbanisation dominate the experience.

Old Tom Morris laid out a course in 1891; it later disappeared from regular play before Gordon Irvine identified the old ground in 2005 and helped restore it with Martin Ebert and the local community.

The restored course follows natural contours rather than relying on a perfectly documented historical plan. Greens, tees, and fairways are nestled within almost untouched hollows, bumps, and valleys.

The wind and unpredictable bounces ensure every round is different. The terrain shares its space with local agricultural practices.

The small-scale community welcome and the journey to the Outer Hebrides are integral to the round.

Designed in 1891 by Old Tom Morris; rediscovered in 2005; restoration led by Gordon Irvine and Martin Ebert; a true machair course.
