Ardglass — a fiercely maritime clifftop course surrounding a medieval clubhouse
Geography & setting
Ardglass clings to the rocky coast of County Down, overlooking the Irish Sea. The opening holes immediately follow the cliffs and coves, with views towards the Mourne Mountains and St John’s Lighthouse.
History
Organised golf in Ardglass dates back to the late 19th century. The course gradually expanded along the cliffs, only reaching its full eighteen-hole configuration in the 20th century. Its clubhouse occupies an old fortified warehouse, the construction of which began no later than 1405, before its transformation into a residence and then a golf club.
Architecture
The course is not a classic dune links. It utilizes a rocky plateau, walls, coves, abrupt changes in elevation, and fairways often sloped towards the sea. The variety of the terrain produces highly individualised holes.
The course in detail
The first six holes form a particularly spectacular opening, with several tee shots played close to the void. The 12th, a long par 3 played towards a coastal promontory, is one of Ireland's most photographed holes.
Club experience
The arrival at the medieval clubhouse gives Ardglass an incomparable identity. The experience is that of a lively and accessible club, not a resort, located about thirty minutes from Royal County Down.
Why play this course
The Round selects it for the unique union of built history, cliffs, and irregular architecture. Few courses give such an immediate impression of playing at the edge of the world.
