Thomas Daniel Weiskopf was born at Massillon, Ohio, on 9 November 1942. He attended Ohio State University and turned professional in 1964. His height, powerful elegant swing and sometimes explosive temperament produced the nickname “Towering Inferno.” He won sixteen PGA Tour events and enjoyed his finest season in 1973, with seven victories worldwide and the Open Championship at Royal Troon. He also finished runner-up at the Masters four times and represented the United States in the 1973 and 1975 Ryder Cups. During his playing career Weiskopf studied how courses rewarded or restricted aggression. In the 1980s he formed a partnership with Jay Morrish, an experienced architect whose background included Jones, Muirhead and Nicklaus. The combination united a champion’s judgement with command of routing and construction. TPC Scottsdale Stadium, Troon North, Forest Highlands Canyon and Loch Lomond are among their most important works. After the partnership ended, Weiskopf developed his own practice and worked for almost twenty years with Phil Smith. Hualalai, Snake River, Forest Dunes, Yellowstone Club and the final project at Black Desert demonstrate a preference for expansive mountain, lava and desert landscapes. He also led a notable renovation of Torrey Pines North. His best-known signature is the short, potentially drivable par four. Weiskopf valued the type because it creates a genuine decision: attack with driver, choose a safer line or lay back. More broadly, his courses commonly offer generous width, visible risk and angles that reward aggression without making the cautious route impossible. This daily playability distinguishes the work from signature courses built principally to impress. Weiskopf died from pancreatic cancer at Big Sky on 20 August 2022 and was inducted into the World Golf Hall of Fame in 2024. His architectural legacy is substantial: he renewed the short par four, helped define the golfing language of the American desert and demonstrated that a champion could become a genuine author through durable professional partnerships.
