Thomas A. Marzolf graduated cum laude in landscape architecture from Virginia Tech in 1982, with additional study in art and art history. He joined Fazio Golf Course Designers in 1983. More than four decades within one practice is exceptional in contemporary architecture and provided education through hundreds of site visits, construction projects, clubs and landscape conditions. Marzolf became a senior design associate and major consultant within the firm. He has contributed to more than ninety original courses and numerous renovations. Wade Hampton, Hudson National, Sand Ridge, Capital City Club’s Crabapple Course, the Sandy Lane courses, Corales, the Ritz-Carlton Members Course and Adare Manor are among projects receiving his direct input. Many are publicly known solely under Tom Fazio’s name; more accurate interpretation should recognise Marzolf as one of the practice’s operational and artistic authors. His responsibilities span the entire process: site study, routing, green and bunker shaping, documentation, vegetation, construction supervision and final presentation. He shares Fazio’s preference for coherent landscapes, generous corridors and highly resolved finish. His career, however, possesses another essential dimension: historic restoration. Marzolf has worked at Oakmont for several U.S. Opens and at Merion, Oak Hill, Riviera, Saucon Valley, Nassau and the Country Club of Scranton. At Fox Chapel he participated in restoring Seth Raynor through plans, photographs and understanding of template holes. Such assignments require distinction among original intent, accumulated alteration and modern club or championship needs. He served as ASGCA president in 2005-06 and also became an EIGCA member. His tournament consulting includes numerous U.S. Opens, PGA Championships, U.S. Amateurs and women’s events. A living architect, Marzolf perfectly illustrates the importance of authors within major firms. His name is less familiar than the Fazio brand, but his field decisions, artistic eye and historical knowledge have directly shaped some of the contemporary era’s most prestigious private and championship courses.
