Rod Whitman

Rod Whitman was born and raised in Alberta, Canada. He studied landscape and entered golf-course construction early, where his talent as a shaper became decisive. He worked with Pete Dye and later with Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw, absorbing two apparently contrasting traditions: Dye’s taste for provocative form and Coore & Crenshaw’s discipline toward natural land. The combination produced a personal language. Wolf Creek near Ponoka was one of his first major projects and remains highly admired in Canada. Blackhawk near Edmonton confirmed his ability to use valleys and prairie soils. Sagebrush, developed with Richard Zokol and Armen Suny, offered open, firm and unconventional golf in the interior of British Columbia. Cabot Links in Nova Scotia brought international recognition. The course follows the Gulf of St Lawrence across a former mining and industrial site. Whitman transformed it into a modern links with connected fairways, broad greens and options determined by wind. The project helped establish Cabot as a global destination. He later designed The Nest short course at Cabot Cape Breton. Whitman is above all a field architect. He operates machinery, shapes greens and allows ideas to evolve during construction. His surfaces are commonly large, animated and receptive to varied trajectories. Firmness and enjoyment matter more than perfectly polished appearance. He joined Dave Axland and Keith Cutten in Whitman, Axland & Cutten, extending this craft culture.
