Peter Thomson

Peter William Thomson was born in Brunswick, Melbourne, on 23 August 1929. He learned golf on public courses and turned professional in 1947. Precision, wind play and strategic intelligence made him Australia’s leading golfer of his era. He won The Open five times between 1954 and 1965 and more than eighty tournaments internationally. Unlike many champions, he continually studied courses and wrote clearly about strategy. Around 1970 Thomson joined Michael Wolveridge and later Ross Perrett. Their practice became one of the most prolific in the Southern Hemisphere. Thomson contributed links culture, a champion’s judgement and promotional authority, while Wolveridge and Perrett supplied essential technical design, documentation and delivery. The firm worked throughout Australia, New Zealand, Asia and Europe. Moonah Links Open, The National Ocean, Hope Island, Wairakei International, Carya and the Duke’s Course at St Andrews are prominent associations. It also altered historic clubs including Royal Adelaide, Royal Canberra and Royal Sydney. Thomson played a major role in Asian golf through tournament participation, support for regional circuits and projects in India, Thailand, China, Indonesia and Singapore. His philosophy favoured simplicity. He often reasoned backwards from green to tee and wanted the drive to create meaning for the next shot. Links-inspired forms were sometimes transferred to tropical sites where soils and grasses could not support equivalent ground play, attracting criticism. The best projects nevertheless demonstrate genuine understanding of wind, angles and rhythm. Thomson died on 20 June 2018. His legacy extends beyond five Claret Jugs. He helped professionalise Australian architecture, built a durable international practice and used his prestige to open new markets. The courses should, however, be presented as collective products of a firm rather than isolated drawings by a champion.
