Perry Dye

Perry Dye was the elder son of Pete and Alice Dye and the third generation of a family connected with course construction. From the age of twelve he followed his father to projects in the Midwest and Dominican Republic, learning drainage, machinery, greens and the relationship among design, building and maintenance. Like his brother P. B., he received a strongly practical education, but later chose a more structured and international business organisation. Perry entered full-time design and construction during the early 1980s and founded Dye Designs in 1984. Two years later he directed the company toward international markets, anticipating growth in Japan, Asia, Turkey and resort development. West One’s in Japan, Lykia Links in Turkey, Pound Ridge, Desert Pines and Auburn Hills are among known works. He retained family characteristics: irregular form, expressive bunkering, strategic angles and courses with immediate identity. He also developed particular attention to turf selection and water conservation. In arid settings he promoted “Brown is Beautiful,” favouring drought-tolerant grasses and native areas over uniformly green and expensive landscapes. Perry was highly active in golf-construction organisations. The Golf Course Builders Association of America created an award bearing his name to recognise exceptional service. This involvement reflected his conviction that a course depends as much on construction teams as on the designer’s signature. He died in July 2021 at the age of sixty-eight. His career is sometimes overshadowed by his parents, yet it was important in the international spread of the Dye language and in environmentally practical construction. Attribution should identify Dye Designs collaborators and distinguish personal projects from wider family involvement.
