Paul Burke “P. B.” Dye is the younger son of Pete and Alice Dye. He grew up in a family where travel and conversation were dominated by courses under construction. At nine he was already learning to operate a bulldozer at Crooked Stick; at sixteen he assisted his father at Teeth of the Dog in the Dominican Republic. His education was less academic than craft based: understand soil, move a bank, build drainage, shape a bunker and immediately observe how a ball responds. P. B. attended the University of Tampa, studying psychology and Spanish, a particularly useful language for Caribbean work. Unlike large firms organised around drafting, engineering and administration, he chose an extremely light structure. He maintains virtually no permanent office or staff, frequently lives on site and personally operates machinery. P. B. Dye Golf Club, Fisher Island, Loblolly Pines, Legends Moorland, La Cana, DeBordieu and Palm Beach Polo Cypress are among his principal associations. The Dye family language is clear: diagonal orientation, deep bunkers, irregular forms, sleepers, powerful landforms and provocative visual decisions. Yet his work possesses a separate spontaneity because design and construction are not divided. P. B. emphasises understanding a developer’s economic model. A course cannot succeed if it destroys the logic of a residential project, but neither should it become leftover space between houses. Negotiation among golf, cost and land is therefore part of architecture. He has built more than thirty courses, principally in the eastern United States and Caribbean. A survivor of several cancers, he has continued an itinerant life among Ohio, Florida and the Dominican Republic. A living architect, his full birth date is not confirmed in reliable public professional sources. His legacy is that of a shaper-author whose thought can be read directly in machine marks and improvised field details.
