Mike DeVries

Mike DeVries grew up in Michigan, where dunes, forests and glacial landforms profoundly shaped his architectural outlook. He studied landscape at the University of Michigan and gained important experience with Tom Fazio and on construction and restoration projects. Rather than rapidly build a large practice, DeVries chose a small, craft-based organisation centred on long periods in the field. Early Michigan courses including Diamond Springs and Pilgrim’s Run demonstrated that interesting golf could be produced with reasonable budgets. Greywalls, set among rock outcrops above Lake Superior, revealed his attraction to difficult sites and dramatic transitions. Kingsley Club near Traverse City became his most recognised American work, combining large natural movement, expressive greens and architecture that appears shaped by wind and ice. Cape Wickham on Tasmania’s King Island brought worldwide attention. The course follows Bass Strait and incorporates dunes, rocks and lighthouse views, yet is more than a photographic landscape. Fairway angles, entrances to greens and firmness create strategy that changes with the wind. DeVries works directly with shapers and prefers to resolve details on site. His greens accept several types of shot and bunkers commonly grow from surrounding landforms. The practice is minimalist in organisation but the playing surfaces can be highly expressive. He has also restored historic Michigan clubs, demonstrating knowledge of Ross and other classical architects. A living architect, DeVries is less prolific than major brands, and that scarcity forms part of his identity. His legacy is that of a regional craftsman who became international without abandoning proximity to construction.
