Mike Clayton

Mike Clayton was born in Melbourne in 1957 and first became a touring professional. He won events in Australasia and competed in Europe, observing a wide range of course styles. Unlike many signature champions, Clayton simultaneously developed deep knowledge of architectural history, particularly the work of MacKenzie, Russell and the Morcom family on the Melbourne Sandbelt. He gradually moved into design and renovation. Collaboration with Tom Doak at Barnbougle Dunes in Tasmania contributed to the international revival of Australian destination golf. The course follows dunes, accepts unconventional sequences and gives priority to wind, firmness and strategic width. It demonstrated that a remote project could attract golfers through quality of experience alone. Clayton later worked with John Sloan and then within the group now known as OCM, alongside Geoff Ogilvy, Mike Cocking and Ashley Mead. The practice is especially known for Australian renovation. Peninsula Kingswood was almost entirely reconstructed along existing corridors with new Sandbelt-inspired greens and bunkers. Victoria, Royal Canberra, Bonnie Doon and other clubs received plans intended to restore width, angles and fast surfaces. His philosophy criticises excessive tree planting, narrow fairways and uniform turf that erase original strategy. Clayton advocates ground play, multiple routes and lower maintenance through natural or sandy areas. His direct public voice has sometimes created debate but has helped produce a more demanding architectural culture in Australia. A living architect, Clayton should now be credited within the collective context of OCM. His legacy combines a player’s eye, historical study and active restoration. He helped re-establish the Sandbelt as a world laboratory of strategy and showed that preservation sometimes requires removing accumulated interventions rather than adding new ones.
