Greg Norman

Gregory John Norman was born at Mount Isa, Queensland, on 10 February 1955. He took up golf seriously as a teenager, following his mother into the game and then working as an assistant professional. Progress was extraordinarily rapid. Norman won more than ninety tournaments worldwide, including The Open in 1986 and 1993, and held the world number-one ranking for 331 weeks. His attacking style and power produced the nickname “Great White Shark.” Norman developed an entrepreneurial group around his image at an early stage. Greg Norman Golf Course Design was established in the late 1980s as signature courses became engines for resorts and residential projects. Norman contributed a player’s vision, brand identity and interpretation of risk lines, while associates carried out detailed analysis, documentation and site supervision. Bob Harrison served for more than twenty years as the principal designer in Australia and Asia. Chris Campbell later became central to global operations. Ellerston, The National Moonah, Nirwana Bali, The Bluffs, Sandals Emerald Bay, Al Mouj, Cathedral Lodge and TPC Sugarloaf demonstrate the scale of the practice. Some occupy spectacular natural sites; others required complex landscape manufacture to support property development. Norman generally seeks visually powerful holes and attacking opportunities reflecting his own play. Bunkers, water and diagonals create clear decisions. Quality inevitably varies across more than one hundred projects, and commercial constraints can sometimes dominate strategy. The finest work, especially with Harrison, possesses strong identity and excellent landscape integration. A living signature architect, Norman is also an entrepreneur and global golf personality. His recent role in LIV Golf belongs to another part of his career but affects public perception of the brand. For the Atlas, architecture should be evaluated separately and with precise firm credits. His legacy lies in globalising an Australian signature and building an organisation capable of delivering major projects on six continents.
