Eric Apperly

Eric Langton Apperly was born in Sydney on 16 September 1889 into a prosperous family. A delicate child, he took up golf as therapy and quickly revealed exceptional talent. At sixteen he reached the final of the New South Wales Amateur, later winning that championship five times. In 1920 he became the first golfer from his state to win the Australian Amateur. Championship experience gave him precise understanding of placement, trajectory and match-play pressure. Apperly studied at the University of Sydney and qualified as an architect. A partner in Wright and Apperly, he designed buildings while developing a golf practice and was probably the first Australian to operate professionally in both fields. His plans for greens and alterations were renowned for graphic quality and detail. His first major commission was Avondale in 1926, followed that year by nine holes on the Studley Park estate, later Camden Golf Club. He collaborated with professional Tommy Howard at The Lakes, where exposed sandy ground allowed modern strategic architecture. He also worked at Pymble, Manly, Newcastle, Concord and numerous clubs across New South Wales. In a 1933 article, Apperly argued that a good hole should demand judgement, thought about direction and placement, or a particular variety of execution, regardless of length or par. This statement summarises his outlook. He did not seek spectacle alone; he wanted players to choose and then master a required shot. Apperly died on 26 May 1951 after collapsing in the Manly clubhouse immediately following a round. Many of his courses were later heavily altered, but his historical role remains important. He introduced a culture of professional documentation to Australian golf architecture and demonstrated that a champion amateur trained as an architect could unite graphic quality, strategy and knowledge of play.
