Brian Curley first recognised golf architecture as a profession while working as a cart employee at Spyglass Hill. Seeing Robert Trent Jones credited as designer showed him that a career existed behind the shaped landscape. Gifted in drawing, Curley pursued landscape and entered the industry through construction and large western developments. At Landmark Golf Company he gradually became head of the design office. Landmark produced complex resorts and championship courses in California. Pete Dye was a major influence: Curley admired his unpredictable ideas, persuasive personality and direct engagement with construction. In 1997 Curley bought Landmark’s design operation and shortly afterwards formed Schmidt-Curley with Lee Schmidt. The practice became famous for Mission Hills in China, an unprecedented complex of more than twenty courses carrying international champion signatures. Such an operation required far more than individual holes: multiple-site masterplanning, distinct identities, teams, hotels, roads and construction schedules. Curley also worked at Stone Forest, Amata Spring, Siam Country Club, Shadow Ridge, The Wilderness Club and numerous projects in China, Thailand and Vietnam. He places major importance on image, arguing that photography, social media and Google Earth now expose courses to immediate visual judgement. His work therefore uses graphic bunkering, large lines and readily legible landscapes. The scale of Asian production raises environmental and economic questions. The finest projects nevertheless demonstrate real stylistic variety and adaptation to different climates, soils and markets. A living architect, Curley formed Curley-Wagner with Jim Wagner and remains active in Asia and America. His legacy is that of a large-scale organiser able to turn architecture into an international system without entirely sacrificing individual course identity.
