Bob Harrison

Australienne · Grand concepteur australien des agences internationales

Bob Harrison first studied physics at the University of Sydney before graduating in civil engineering. His final-year thesis already concerned the integration of a golf course with residential development. He then spent more than a decade with Lend Lease in commercial and golf-related project management. This gave him unusual command of engineering, cost, drainage, approvals and the complex relationship between courses and property. When Greg Norman established his design business in the late 1980s, Harrison became the principal architect based in Australia and Asia. For more than twenty-one years he designed or directed many of the firm’s most important projects. His responsibilities extended from routing through detailed drawings and construction supervision, while the Norman signature supplied a champion’s vision and commercial force. Ellerston and The National’s Moonah Course are generally regarded as his major Australian works. Nirwana Bali combines dramatic coastal holes with a manufactured inland landscape made to resemble working rice fields. Brookwater, The Grand, Pelican Waters, The Glades, The Vintage and Stonecutters Ridge demonstrate his ability to handle difficult or flood-prone sites while coordinating golf and residential planning. Harrison is an analytical router. Engineering training allows him to understand constraints quickly, yet his best courses are more than technical solutions. He uses large forms, creates memorable sequences and preserves an impression of naturalness. He has also worked in the United States, China, Japan, Thailand and Indonesia. After leaving GNGCD he continued under his own name. Public recognition remains lower than that of the brands he served, even though he was often the principal author. His profile is therefore essential to understanding signature firms. A living architect, he has limited personal data in public sources, so no unreliable birth year is recorded. His legacy joins design, engineering and delivery of major Australasian projects.
